If you have never made your own fall doormat it is easy but time-consuming. But as long as you take your time and have a little patience you won’t have any issue making a fall front door mat such as this.
Where to buy coir mats for DIY fall doormats?
- JoAnne Fabric – usually on sale
- Ikea – low-cost everyday price if JoAnne is out
- Home Depot – Only in a crunch
You will also need multi-surface or outdoor paint. I like this outdoor paint.
This fall doormat is a fairly easy craft, but it is a little time-consuming. But when those kids show up at your house with their parents, you will be the talk of the neighborhood.
I think I may do a few more, maybe 1 with some fall leaves and another with a jack-o-lantern.
Tips for making a doormat
- save your transfer tape to use on your other doormats like the fall doormat
- remove the stencil immediately after you coat the paint and then touch up after
- Make sure to use outdoor paint if you are going to put your mat outside so that the mat withstands the weather and its elements

Materials
- Blank Coir Mat
- Permanent adhesive vinyl or Cricut stencil vinyl
- Transfer Tape
- Masking tape
- Your design or one of mine, get the freebie above or click to check for other SVGs
- Stencil paint brush
- Heat Gun or Blow Dryer
- Yellow Paint
- Orange Paint
- Black Paint
Tools
- Cricut Machine
- Cricut Standard Grip Mat
- Weeding Tool
- Vinyl Scraper
Instructions
- Download the design.
- Then upload and size the image to fit your doormat, I like to make mine 11.5 by 23.5
- Cut a stencil with your Cricut machine.
- Weed the image and apply transfer Tape to your stencil (I reuse the same piece so that it isn't as sticky)
- Apply the vinyl onto the mat
- Carefully pull off the transfer paper leaving your custom stencil behind onto the mat
- Use the masking tape to tape down the design to the floor mat
- Using a blow dryer or heat gun, heat the vinyl so that it sort of melts tight.
- Apply paint by dabbing with your brush, I sprayed a light coat of white spray paint to prime a bit.
- Remove the vinyl stencil as soon as you are done painting and touch up any areas that may need more paint
- Allow to dry for 24 hours
Notes
I discovered later that the heat gun isn't a necessity
