Leather keychains always make a great gift and the Cricut engraving tool makes it super easy to do. For this project I used Cricut genuine leather. I imagine that you could do this with faux leather too but I have to try that another time.
The Cricut Engraving tip made it really easy to accomplish what I was looking to do. It came out amazing, the photos don’t do it any justice.
I made this leather key chain for my husbands birthday, not that he will ever use it, but I had some cricut leather laying around and thought, why not make him a custom leather keychain.
Can I Make Keychains With Cricut?
Cricut launched a bunch of new tips a while back for the Cricut Maker. These new tools expanded the millions of things that the Cricut maker could do. If you haven’t you should really think about expanding your collection of Cricut maker tools with a variety of quickswap tips.
There is a tip for everything, the tip I used on these engraved design on my leather keychains was the engraving tip. This tip is great to use to engrave Cricut aluminum sheets or anodized aluminum, leather, acrylic, actually variety of materials.
Although you don’t need the engraving tool to cut leather with your Cricut, it came in handy for the engraving part of my project.
How Thick Is Cricut Genuine Leather?
For instance, Cricut genuine leather is about 1mm thick. There is a setting in Design Space for Cricut genuine leather but I chose to use the tooling leather which was 1.8mm. So, this prompted for my knife blade to cut. But, the cut didn’t start until after the engraving was done.
Because I wanted to engrave my keychain I placed it on my strong grip mat face down. In other words, the portion that I engraved showed on the top of the keychain after I put it together.
What Blades Do I Need For Cricut Maker?
To clarify, there are a few tools that are specific to the Cricut Maker. But, you can purchase these tools with the quickswap housing or just the tip for the tool.

- Fine Debossing Tip
- Basic Perforation Blade
- Knife Blade
- Rotary Blade
- Scoring Wheels
I actually have them all but haven’t gotten a chance to much use the scoring wheels, debossing tip, perforation blade or rotary blade very much. I have plans to in the future though.
The Cricut Maker makes crafting so simple and easy. For example, there are literally 1000s of projects out there to try!
How To Make A Keychain With Cricut?
- Firstly, find, upload or make a keychain design in Cricut design space. Check the video to learn how to make your own.
- Next, resize the keychain in DS to fit the size you want. I made mine 2.5 inches.
- Now, send the project to your machine and select the cutting settings. I used tooling leather 1.8mm.
- Lastly, cut out the project and add your keyring to the loop.

- Find, upload or make a keychain design in Cricut design space. Use the video to learn how to make your own.
- I used the Dad SVG above and made the keychain in Cricut Design Space.
- Resize the keychain in DS to to the size you want. I made mine 2.5 inches.
- Now, send the project to your machine and select the cutting settings.
- Click browse and type in leather. I used tooling leather 1.8mm, so that it used the Cricut Knife blade to cut.
- Load the engraving tool first to engrave your design.
- Cut out the project following the prompts on the screen.
- Last add your keyring to the loop.
